Attitude Theatre is searching for a set designer for the production of Nicholas Dunn’s The Value, to be staged at the Langham Court Theatre in March.
Present. An over-night motel room. There are worse motel rooms than this one, but nothing that would make a Motel 6 envious. The room is cramped, dominated by a queen size bed, above which hangs a generic landscape painting. A bathroom door separates the toilet and shower, but the vanity and its large mirror make up the stage-left wall of the main room.
Opposite it on the stage-right wall is a large window overlooking the parking lot outside, and the entrance to the room, equipped with a key-card lock. The large window, the mirror and the painting above the bed unify the otherwise unremarkable space, but the effect is unpleasant.
They leer, these rigid rectangle frames, enclosing the room in a maddeningly symmetrical, inescapable way, for each of them- the window, the mirrors and the piece of art- in some sense of the word, reflect.
